Technical SEO

A Technical SEO Checklist for 2026

Most technical audits try to cover everything at once and end up fixing nothing. I work through sites in a fixed order, because the earlier items block the value of the later ones: there's no point optimizing content on a page Google can't crawl.

1. Crawlability before anything else

Start with the server, not the content. Check response codes across your key templates, confirm robots.txt isn't blocking anything important, and pull your XML sitemap against what's actually indexed in Search Console. A bloated sitemap full of noindexed or redirected URLs wastes crawl budget on pages that were never going to rank.

2. Indexing hygiene

Duplicate content from filters, tracking parameters, and pagination is the most common issue I find on mid-sized sites. Canonical tags should point to one clear version of each page, and anything genuinely thin: tag pages, empty category pages: should be noindexed rather than left to compete with your real content.

3. Core Web Vitals

Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, and Cumulative Layout Shift aren't just ranking signals: they're the reason someone stays on your page long enough to convert. I cover this in more depth in a separate post, but the short version: fix render-blocking scripts and unoptimized images before anything else on this list.

4. Structured data

Schema markup won't fix a ranking problem on its own, but it decides how your page shows up once it does rank: review stars, FAQ dropdowns, breadcrumb trails. Validate it, don't just install a plugin and assume it's correct.

5. Internal linking

The last step, and the one people skip. Your most important pages should be reachable in a few clicks from the homepage, and your internal links should use descriptive text, not "click here." This is also where topic clusters do their real work: linking related content together so authority flows to the pages you actually want to rank.

Fix crawlability and indexing first. Content and links can't do their job on pages Google never sees properly.

If you want a second pair of eyes on your own site against this list, get in touch: that's the kind of practical audit worth doing before talking strategy.
